They did. The third film was called "Speed Zone". It came out in 1989. You can look it up online here at IMDB.
The only original cast member that returned was Jamie Farr as The Sheik. And all he did was have a small part at the beginning talking about the race in general to a reporter.
You'll notice that a lot of the actors in the third film were of SCTV fame. -

Well, old thread, Dom and a lot of the others are gone now. Anyway, I doubt another movie would be any good. What made Cannonball Run so good is that it had the 80s atmosphere about it. If it were to be made today, the studio doing it would probably make it a completely different experience. Personally, I think a lot of comedies today are just plain mediocre to bad. I might just be me getting old, but that's how I think.

"What made Cannonball Run so good is that it had the 80s atmosphere about it."
It's good to see others that recognize this in movies. The eighties really did have a special, magnificent, magical atmosphere (I have tried calling it with different names, but people usually still don't understand what I am talking about - I guess they don't feel it) about it, and it radiates in these movies very powerfully.
That's something that cannot be regenerated or recreated in 2015, no matter what one tries. At least I don't think it can. Though, if I knew what -caused- it, perhaps it could. But I have no idea.
To me, every decade had its own, specific, unique "aroma", but then it suddenly went flat around the 1990s, and I couldn't tell the difference between a movie made in 2005 and 2015, feeling-wise.
But I could always tell if I am watching an early 1980s-movie or a 'modern movie'.
And you are right, that IS what makes it so good.
But there are some other contributing factors, like things being so free back then. Corporations didn't have the huge hold on people that they do now, people weren't as scared, the so-called "9/11" (I still call it "11.9.") hadn't happened yet, and free goofing around was still allowed. And misandry wasn't AS mandatory, or AS powerful as it is nowadays in movies.
There were less acts and statutes, less restrictions, less rules, less people on the planet - things were more harmonious, atmospheric, exciting, fun, generally speaking.
Also, this may sound a little weird, but time has sped up. The clocks of course always show the same amount of time, and the seconds seem to go the same speed, but you can notice how much faster a year goes nowadays than it did in the early eighties.
According to one theory and calculation, there's like "8 hours per day" less actual, experiencable time. That would explain why no one has the possibility to do things properly anymore, why so many shortcuts are used nowadays (back then, they had time to craft the most beautiful artifacts, if you look at historical objects, for example - there are all kinds of structures and twirly shapes in every household object that must have taken lots of time to make), and why days seem shorter.
At the very least, I am convinced that "something" has sped up, if only as some kind of internal "pace" of the planet/atmosphere/life/whatever. Something is considerably faster now.
Back then there was ample time, so people could relax easier.. and together with the atmosphere and the magical eighties feel, it was a pretty dreamy time for making fun, goofy, and yet inspiring movies, like this.
This could never be recreated, until we get similar 'pace' and as good 'atmosphere' back. And until we get much less people on this planet - I think that huge amount creates some kind of 'pressure'. I don't think Earth is meant to have this many morons walking on it.. heck, around 3,5 billion was enough for me, why can't it be enough for the reproducer-maniacs?
(I know that Earth technically -could- support even more, and there is certainly ROOM for a lot more people - all 7 billion could space-wise comfortably be moved to Australia, and still everyone could have a big farm (at least as a family of four or so). But I am talking about foodwise, 'feelingwise' and production-wise - this kind of hectic production pace can't be good for anything in any case) -

Agrees with everything on that list. But the time / years going faster is an adult thing. I remember being told by my granddad ,parents and even teachers that as a kid time seems to go slower but as you get older and become more responsible itll go extremely fast.
Spoilers are overrated -

Yes. As a kid, you spend a lot of time in anticipation of birthdays, Christmas, school vacations, etc. That makes the time seem to pass more slowly. As an adult, those things just aren't as exciting and can be seen as just more things that need to be done.
