Geoffrey Rush. Combine his Barbossa with his Linoel Logue, I think you could have the perfect Merlin. Anyone else agree?
I'm not overly keen on the remake, but I'm open to it, and if it has to happen, you need a good cast to sell it.

Agree completlyhe would be a fine choice.
Prehaps Ben Kingsley would do OK.but he is a tad short i think.

Ben Kingsley has already been Merlin, in The Last Legion.

Geoffrey Rush would be excellent, particularly if this Merlin is a bit more overtly manipulative and less of a straight forward mentor in the Obi-Wan Kenobi mold. Stewart would be really good if the role were written to be really straight forward and more theatrical.
My choice would be Hugo Weaving. He's a little younger than the typical Merlin age range so his Merlin would be more vigorous, and he's Hugo Weaving so his Merlin would also have a bit more of an edge.

hmmmmm, hadn't thought of him, but now that you say it I can definitely see it. Now if only he can do something to his enunciation that doesn't make me want to end all of his Merin lines with "Mr. Anderson", that would be great.

Just please, God, don't cast Keanu as Arthur and I think we're okay

I think Charles Dance would make a terrific Merlin; then again, I think he's terrific at everything he does ^^. But if we're talking remake of this Excalibur, then we'd have to go with someone younger-looking; Williamson was a stunning choice in that respect, because his casting broke up with a very long tradition of Merlins looking like Old Father Time.
Jason Isaacs maybe? Stunning eyes and mischievous smile. Yes, definitely Isaacs.

As someone has suggested Patrick Stewart (great choice) as Merlin, similar reasons propel me to offer Liam Neeson?

I know, I know: Hes in EVERYTHING lately.. But, he has a great voice, an ethereal presence & the looks to carry it off..
To be honest, I just want him to crack on with series 3 of Sherlock (& 4,5,6,7,8.), however, I would be willing to allow him a "sabbatical" for this one!
