She's notorious for her on-stage nudity, has done so in several pre-Excalibur productions.
It is her doing her own semi-nude scenes in this film.

Helen has appeared totally nude in several films. In "The Madness Of King George" (1994) she is nude. The most notorious being "Caligula" (1980) which was produce by Penthouse magazine publisher Bob Guccione. It was an "X Rated" film, which is famous for many sex scenes including the "Best Lesbian Scene" ever filmed at one time. She has no problem exposing her body, at any age!

As Helen Mirren once said to David Letterman, "I'm known for getting my kit off."
Gotta love those British expressions. Excalibur is not the only sword raised in honor of the lovely, and often nude, Ms. Mirren.

Even today, she displays a grace and elegance rarely seen today - especially since it appears to me that she has avoided the plastic surgery obsession in Hollywood.
If you would like to see an example of what I'm talking about, take a look at the relatively recent movie 'RED' (I haven't seen RED 2,so I cannot comment on it).
Incidentally, I've always considered Audrey Hepburn to have been one of, if not the most beautiful actresses of all time, and she remained lovely throughout her career and life as well.

No offence to Americans, but we British and Irish have an earthier, more down-to-earth sense of life and humour. A grittiness.
But yes, Helen Mirren hasn't become some dumb, ageing plastic blonde Baseball/Golfing wife.

I don't remember any nude scenes from her in this.

In the scene where she basically rapes Arthur, she is wearing a sheer dress and you can easily see that she is naked underneath. I typically pause or rewind that part. Quite the body.

                    kinda
                    Way beyond kinda my friend.
She is exceptionally erotic in this film.
I don't think it was a body double, if you look at some of her earlier more nudey works you can clearly see she is rather impressive in those, and was never shy about nudity.

According to John Boorman's DVD commentary, Helen Mirren almost turned down the part of Morgana after revealing to Boorman that she thought it would be impossible for her to work with Nicol Williamson (as Merlin) due to a previous relationship that they had a few years back, which ended with both of them hating each others guts.
But, despite Helen's pessimism that she could ever work with Williamson again, Boorman hired them both anyways with the intent of using their real world anger, bitter resentment and antagonistic personal feelings that the one time lovers now had with one another, and use all of that raw emotion as subtext for their performances.
Watching both Hellen's and Nicol's performances in 'Excalibur', especially their scenes together, it's easy to make the argument that Boorman's strategy worked out perfectly. And, fortunately for the production and for the rest of us, neither of the two sabotaged the production of 'Excalibur' by storming off the set, and their sense of professionalism prevailed over what ever hard feelings they had for one another at the time.
                      Foot Note:
According the Boorman's commentary. Helen Mirren ended up having an affair with the younger and relatively unknown Liam Neeson during principle shooting of Excalibur, which continued after the production had ended. So, take that Merlin!

No it is not weird to think that Morgana is hot. Yes Helen Mirren is up there in age now but she was hot back then and she is still hot today. Don't be embarrassed. She is still hot. You might need to live some more years but when you get a bit older you will understand. 🙂
