    Did I miss something or did they ever explain why the master has to test the crew in this way? What is to gain? Who or what exactly is the master? They never bother to explain these things, perhaps they were anticipating a sequel?

      Were you not paying attention? The Master was Kore, the cook played by Ray Walston. The entire point of the test was to find his replacement. Cabren was the last man standing, he beat his fears, he became the new Master.

          Are you referring to Robert England's character?
          He stayed outside, but I don't remember anything happening to him.

            Ranger (Englund) wasn't strong enough to continue on, so he didn't meet all the qualifications.
            But it's not just about killing the people, because the Master says that they all could have lived if they were strong enough to face their fears (like the Lead and Ranger did). So it didn't have to just be ONE of them capable of becoming the new Master.
            Most likely Ranger will go back with the New Master and be his companion, like that old woman we saw at the start of the movie.
