Saw it with my mom and sister, which was sort of embarrassing (I was 12 at the time). Loved the movie, but couldn't discuss it much with them afterwards except about the great location shots.

Yes I saw it in the theater in the early 1980's. It has survived as a cult classic and should not be missed. The score went well with carrying the story along too. Audiences got the humor too. Like the idiot (!) caveman that screwed things up not once but twice! The rebuff of Perlman's caveman, the exhaustion of the caveman after having to fulfill the ritual needs of the ladys from the more advanced tribe. All sorts of things that were received well.

Interesting that you should call it a 'cult classic' because it opened to much hoopla and was a mainstream hit, at least in NYC. It played to packed audiences in a huge theater, the Ziegfeld, which is the last big screen theater in the city.
I loved it when it came out, except for a major objection, which I wrote about in a separate thread.

Me, I was 25. Loved it on the big screen. Recently watched on DVD. Stands up pretty well.

I saw it in the theatre. I agree with the earlier poster that this wasn't really a "cult classic" because it got so much attention upon its release. This movie is totally suitable for 7 year-old. The visuals are amazing and the sex won't freak out a kid. My dad took me to the Blue Max at age 6 which featured some bare female breasts. It's only bad if you have a puritan view towards sex (and I feel sorry for anyone like that). I also feel sorry for anyone who doesn't believe in evolution and thinks man came from the garden of eden. I pity those idiots.

MRHooba, the evidence is 100 percent fact, I agree ( fossil record, DNA similarities, anatomical structures of the limbs and body, embryology, vestiges, back/Knee problems etc., similar Genes, missing link species of things like fish/Amphib. etc..).
However, I do not feel right calling them idiots. I would recommend a few easy to read books that clearly lays this out.
                Here is 2:
                Why Evolution is True
Your inner fish!!!! A superb little book.
We are really just advanced fish.
This thread is not meant to offend people
IF this movie is ever on TV again I will watch it!!!!
Back in those days just surviving the month would of been a huge accomplishment.

Highly doubt that Metro DEtroit theater is still around.
Not been back to Michigan in a very long time and could not even remember the area.

I was 11 and saw it with my older cousin. We thought it was hysterical.
A funnier story. I saw Deathtrap(1982) starring Mchael Cane and Christopher Reeves with my Mom and Dad. In the scene with the homosexual kiss, my Mom blurted out "Oh my god, cover his eyes!". And I'm laughing "Ha-ha. Superman's gay!".

My dad took me to see it in the theater when I was 14. We both liked it.

My bf and I saw it in Berkeley and we liked it so much we went to see it a second time. We wanted to catch the things we thought we missed. I remember really liking Rae Dawn Chong's acting.

I did. Loved it. Seen it multiple times since. Just watched it with a deaf person. Need no sound or at least words.

I was about 20 years old when it came out and I saw it in the theater. Although the movie was rated R, the advertising campaign made it look like a family movie. There were several parents with kids in the theater.
I'll never forget, when the first "naughty" scene by the lakeside went down, that a number of these parents stood up, grabbed their kid's hands, and dragged them out of the theater (some of them crying that they wanted to stay.)
