Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Mommie Dearest

Poor girl, ha. She's never met the man before yet is supposed to immediately refer to him as her father.

It was all titles to her. They meant nothing. Joan was "mommie dearest". a name, not a feeling, not a love, nothing. Daddy would come just as easily.

I know! How awkward to have to walk up to some guy you've never seen before and call him "Daddy."

Ha! My aunt (who has been married a couple times) tried to pull this same kind of stunt with me referring to her most recent husband. Talkin' bout "call him Uncle" Dude, I'm over 30 yrs old! Get the hell outta here with that! I'm calling him Floyd or whatever his damn name is!

At least he was gracious enough not to embarrass her by saying "I'm not your father!" I know calling the other men her "uncles" was way out there and having one of them gently tell her "I'm not your uncle" was okay because, well, he wasn't! But she was so thrust into this relationship and he was such a nice man to her. Probably the nicest male figure she had.
