William O'Neil - RUSSELL CROWE
Sheppard - KEVIN SPACEY

I think Crowe would be a great choice.
Spacey as Sheppard would be good, but I'll throw John Malkovich into the ring (he could be that guy trying to make that last score before retirement).

How much of an A-list project the studio wants to make of this, will influence how much they want to spend on star power for the actors. But let's keep this to a fantasy list for now. And just to be different from the first list posted, which was pretty good:
William O'Neil - Daniel Craig
Sheppard - Ray Stevenson
Marie Lazarus - Sanaa Lathan
Montone - Jon Bernthal
Carol O'Neil - Rose Byrne
And instead of Steven Berkoff as the drug crazie - Andrew Lincoln
Instead of John Ratzenberger as the early death - Charlie Sheen!

This can definitely use a remake. The ending was terrible & some of the visual effects were cringeworthy. Even for the early 80's.
