Holy beep naked lunch!! that is a trip and a half!
I found the film hilarious, but it is of a sinister nature but then again I found possession to be even more hilarious from scene to scene.
Anyway, Cronenberg is the master, so this conversation is over

For the suspense side of things and Isabelle Adjani, Roman Polanski's The Tenant is an ace movie.

The above is an excellent reccommendation. If you enjoy dark / macabre and hysterical cinema, The Tenant is a superb choice. Isabelle Adjani also features as a pivotal (if somewhat mysterious) role in the film.

This movie is Revolutionary Road, Audition, and Repulsion all mixed into one. Especially the latter two - the more modern somewhat similar ones, anyway. Much more artsy, though, of course.

Lamberto Bavas "Macabro" is surprisingly simillar to this one, though not nearly as surreal and artsy.
The theater is like a faithful wife. The film is the great adventure, the costly, exacting mistress

movie reminded me of Species don't ask me which one, it reminded me themes from all of them, evil creatures copulating with humans and struggling to survive. On the very shallow and surface level I thought of species, but I know the deeper meaning which is the destructiveness of divorce reminds me of Kramer vs Kramer.

I would recommend the original STRAW DOGS and FUNNY GAMES
both are intense psychological thrillers about a husband and wife.

I am going to assume you mean movies with a hidden subcontext or that movies that work like riddles that you have to solve.
Possesion is by far one of my favorites and in contrast to David Lynch, it does have an open interpretation. I wouldn t say David Lynch is obvious but Mullholand Drive for example, SPOILER: IS ABOUT NAOMI BEING IN LOVE WITH ANOTHER WOMAN AND HATING THE DIRECTOR ETC.
Possession mirrors the viewer's persona. I personally believe that this movie is about a relationship that is going through hardships and that is eventually maturing, were both people eventually improve.
So, to the point I will nominate some movies. If you ve seen then read the brief explanation provided below. If not see the movies and then read the explanations.
Of course Stanley Kubrick's movies (if you thought Space Odyssey was about a Sci-Fi flick, you are an idiot) and of course David Lynche's movies. Blue Velvet might seem like a noir mystery but of course you know there issomething hiding behind it.
                                BUT,
there are other movies that completely went under the radars.

                                1. Signs.
                                2. Sucker Punch.
                                3. Drag me to Hell.
                                  Explanations Spoilers.
                                4. Shyamalan is a genious. To start with, Signs is a very well directed movie. It is perfect not only as a sci-fi flick with aliens but also as a horror movie. You all remember the walking alien in the party and the emotions this movie put you through. Like I said, if you go see Space Odyssey expecting a Sci-Flick you ll be dissapointed, if you see Possession expecting girls screaming and priests shouting about the Power of Christ, youll be dissapointed. However, if you look at the typical alien movie formula its all the same. They overpower us and the only way for us to win is through a deus ex machina, bomb the mothership. What a beep overused formula (Indepedence Day, Avengers, Battle for LA tons of other movies). For Signsits water. Oooohwhat a twist Shyamalan you idiot, we know you love twists but that goes too far, water for crying out loud? Then this movie was dismissed as a bad movie until years later someone realizedits not aliens. Its demons. Google (signs alien demons) to read the explanation.
What an amazing piece of work. Shyamalan used all of his tools perfectly and he incorporated his personal style in that movie, which are his two themes, religion and a twist. The twist is not in the movie. It took years for people to get it. Signs has the biggest twist in cinema history. And people dont know it yet.
                                5. Suckerpunch.
Baby Doll is Sweet Pea. Knowing that, watch the movie again. The girls only show up less than few seconds before the mentor woman informs baby doll that she is the God of the Fantasy world. Sweet Pea's first words, the girl who escapes, are "I am the star of the show". In the end the dude tries to rape Baby Doll and he screams at her something like "Your body is here but your mind is not" queue a scene were Sweet Pea gets on the bus. How else could you realistically explain that the old mentor dude from the fantasy world is the bus driver as well? Do you think it is just a funny ending (Nightmare on Elm Street were Freddy shows up after he s been beaten for absolutely no reason)?
No, it means something and Zack Snyder is also an awesome awesome director. When Nolad talks about layers withing layers of dreams its cool. When Snyder does it (in a much more extreme fantasy world) its dumb. This is why the partnership between Nolan and Snyder does not surprise me. Both of them are awesome.
                                6. Sam Raimi was a good director who revolutionized the horror industry. He brought splatter movies to the masses. Comedy and extreme violence. Drag me to Hell has his own personal style. It has Sam Raimi written all over it. But chances are, you missed the subcontect.
Again, none of it is real. The protagonist, is struggling with bulimia. Google "Drag me to hell bulimia".
