After watching this film again tonight,I have always asked myself this question,"What happened to Timothy Hutton?" How come he did not achieve the same status that both Tom Cruise and Sean Penn did after both played supporting role to him at TAPS?I don't think that it was simply due to lack of talent for he himself was a talented actor for he did this movie after winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in the 1980 film,Ordinary People.
Was it due to his being picky about roles? Was it due to having an alleged drinking problem? Was it simply bad luck? I think that I have guessed that both reasons could have made an impact to becoming a Hollywood superstar. But there could be more reason on why his career did not reach the same level as both Cruise and Penn did.
It was just so sad that a talented actor like him would not even be at least as popular as these his former TAPS co-star. I know that there are actors who are less talented compared to him BUT are more popular compared to him. Just so sad when people with talent don't become superstars. -

I also think his face typecast him as somewhat sullen and melancholy characters. His maturity kept him from teenage angst films and no one needs that kind of melancholy in their 20's.
I think he's one of those actors who is great in the right role in their early years and will have a dead zone until they can come back in their adulthood and shine again.
