Why did the name get changed from Thief?

I think that's what the film was called overseas, in France maybe?

Both titles are pedestrian. A more fitting one would have been James Caan in Michael Manns Nothing is Dangerous.

No, no. I'm going to have to disagree with you on that.
Remember the heated conversation between Frank and Jessie after Frank picked her up at the Katz 'n jammers? "I'm a thief, alright! I've been in prison!"
One word title, perfect. It's what Frank is, it's what he does, it's in his blood. The used car thing is just a coverup to launder money for the money he makes from selling stolen diamonds. Remember, Frank steals only diamonds or cash. He said so himself with his first meeting with Leo on the dock.
The subject of the movie therefore perfectly matches the title; the title is completely congruent with the contents of the movie, with its subject matter. It's about Frank, the thief, not about whether the streets are nice or violent.
"I really don't like talking about my flair."
