No. The slo-mo shots are back. Also, the "victory nod" is no longer trimmed and the complete beach scene is also intact. To put it simply, it IS the theatrical cut with an additional scene. Criterion didn't advertise that this is indeed a new cut and I cannot figure out why. Months prior to the release, fans were questioning, and hoping, if this release would be a new(er) director's cut. I think many, myself included, didn't want to get their hopes up, which in turn hindered their excitment for this release. When I learned this was a new cut that retained the integrity of the original version, I was pleasantly surprised. That, and it looks beep awesome. It's probably the best bluray I own.

That is awesome. I planned on buying this anyway, but those sped up slo-mo scenes were just weird looking. And the actual slow motion makes the ending so much more powerful and badass. Thanks for the info!

This new 4k transfer (down converted to 1080p for BD) is mind blowing. I first saw THIEF on laserdisc and liked it, but felt the image was foggy at best. The DVD was not reall an improvement, still looking murky so I figured that's how it was shot.
Oh no! This release is astounding on so many levels, it's as if they gave us an entirely new film. The image is mind blowing. Like The Godfather, the cinematographer pushed the limits of the film stock at the time and because of way in which it was shot only now can technology catch up to what was exposed on the negative.
This is a remarkable release. Don't cheap out! It can be had for just $25 at Amazon. Hell I spent $40 on the damn laserdisc when it first came out.
And yes, the remixed sound is also impressive. Criterion sets the standard. -

I agree it looks great, but I think Mann went a little too far with the blue tinting. Not that it didn't originally have that look, but I doubt it was
this
blue. Otherwise, it looks and sounds excellent.

That's excellent news! Thanks, Mountainjam. I can live with the fisherman scene at the beginning, as long as the other stuff has been restored as it was originally. I'll pick up a copy soon.
