A Masterpiece

Well, let's just hope it never happens. There is no reason for a sequel. Can you imagine if classic albums were abused like films are? "Hey, there's this new band and they've decided to make a sequel to Darkside of the Moon, it picks up right where the last album left off. The guy from Nickelback will be playing the part of David Gilmour"

Sorry, I don't think it is the masterpiece that we seem to remember.
I think people are projecting when they think of this movie. The movie opens with what has to be almost a ten minute narration and even goes so far as to alert us all (as lazy as possible) that the protagonist is the chosen one. It is very, very boring and overly dark to start off with. It does lighten up some and seems to get better looking and feeling into the movie. The vast majority of the characters are mean or meanish looking. Okay, it is called the Dark Crystal but it felt overly dark. The opening narration really destroyed any possible depth. The movie ends up having all the vagueness and shallowness of a Cirque Du Soleil show. It is interesting to watch but even when they put the two Gelflings together they TOLD the audience what was happening with the whole dream bonding sequence. It seemed like a really bad adaption of an epic novel at times like that.
The look of the film is close to being a masterpiece. I will agree there. The shallowness of the writing betrays the visual depth. And again, I think those of us who were kids when this came out are PROJECTING our desires, wishes and memories into it. It really isn't that great of a film. And yet, when I see a Dark Crystal lunchbox I have to catch myself from going OH WOW LOOK ITS THE COOLEST THING EVER. because it really wasn't.
But hey, I am all for an attempt at doing fantasy and I feel like criticizing Jim Henson is akin to blaspheming the Holy Spirit. So I have mixed feelings. But having just watched it I must say I was annoyed by the narration, and angered by the easiest ever "put the hero on the quest" plot entry. -

But Jen isn't the chosen one, Kira is.
She's the one who ultimately heals the dark crystal

CG may 'ruin' some movies, but the real issue is plot and dialog. In fact, this is basically the same as a movie thats all nice CG sequences with nothing behind itthe medium may change, but the philosophy remains. All the effort put into the puppets in this film couldn't save it from being extremely poorly written and directed. The plot and characters offer nothing of value and I, as well as the people I watched it with, ended up more disgusted with this movie than awed by its art. It's funny you mention Avatar, because thats exactly what this movie was for that era.
Stupidity isn't a virusbut it sure is spreading like one. -

I just saw this film yesterday and I agree with you that it is a masterpiece. Not for young children, but a wonderful sci-fi/fantasy film.
Even the music was great. Henson was a genius. Too bad he didn't make more movies in this vein. -

Well to me this one is a quite boring movie with puppets. I was impressed by Legend. Or if it has to be some kind of puppet animation, then Nightmare before Christmas ftw (Claymation).
