This film also freaked me out when I was a kid and saw it on TV when it first came out. It's definitely one of the best made for TV horror flicks out thereothers include Wes Craven's "Chiller", a movie about cryogenics and its possible after effects, and "The Midnight Hour", a great Halloween movie (funny how they all were made/came out at around the same time, early to mid 80'ssometimes it's great to know I grew up in such a great time).
The thing that freaked ME out most about the film was that they actually showed the death of kids my age. For example the brother, played by Oliver Robins, being pushed off the roof by the opening window only for the director to cut to the mom dropping a rather ripe watermelon on the floor (and, the subsequent funeral scene in which his casket is lowered into the ground, but half is accidentally dropped, completely destroying any semblance of strength Valerie Harper's character had). Or later, when they showed the flashback of how the sister died in the car accident. (BTW, I think it was actually the brother who tied her shoelaces together). Of course, Dennis Weaver's death was freaky toobut how stupid was he to have a radio perched on the side of the bathtub anyway? Jackass!
But yeah. Very freaky movie. I wish they'd release it on DVD in a wide release so that it's actually available everywherenot just on ebay.

I saw this movie numerous times as a kid. After the first few times, I would turn off the t.v. just before the ending. I really liked Valerie Harper's character. I would make up my own ending in my head to save her!

            bscribe,
When we eventually do get to do the remake, the end will be different. The whole movie will be updated, of course, and given the adrenaline shot that a feature film needs.

I just made a thread about this scene and the special effect they used to subconsciously haunt you:
