Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Next of Kin

    filmicly — 19 years ago(December 10, 2006 04:14 PM)

I can tell you what originally happened after Lance escapes out the window.
Linda runs into the kitchen and bolts the door. She turns and sees Lance coming in the other door.
Rita appears behind Lance with a bloody hand over her eye - she takes her hand away revealing an unharmed eye and cackles 'Missed' She picks up a kitchen knife and goes for Lance,
Linda picks up a tray of cutlery and hurls it at Rita followed by a chair. Rita pushes Linda into a crockery cabinet, the crockery smashes to the ground, Rita stabs at Linda but Linda shoves her aside and the knife sticks into the timber. Rita rips the knife out and goes for Linda. Lance throws his arms around Rita and squeezes her tight, Rita lifts the knife and stabs Lance in the back. Lance slides down hanging onto her feet, and Rita falls to the ground. Linda grabs a large pot of boiling jam on the stove, and pours it onto Rita's head. Rita tries to lift herself up, then falls back motionless.
Linda takes off. Then everything is as per the current movie. The only other change, at the end of the film, the camera is in the tray of the ute looking back at the burning building. Suddenly, a concealed Rita sits up into frame - most of the skin hanging off her face. The Ute bounces over a bump, and she falls off the vehicle.
These scenes were deleted before the film was released.
    Tony Williams - director

thank you Mr Williams for the description of these deleted scenes (can we hope for a special edition on dvd someday, with your audio commentary??)
and congratulations for your work on the film!
"Next of Kin" is one of my favorite films,i'm especially impressed by its stunning camerawork and its subtle way to create fear.

Amen to that! does the original material still exist somewhere?
and a commentarytrack would be GREAT!

Thanks for your info, I like that ending too.How was working with John Jarratt? What do you remember about him? He's such a good actor.

Could you tell why certain scenes were deleted? Especially that last scene you described with Rita sounded interesting
I loved the wheelchair scene but it had me immediately thinking of the puppet scene in Profondo Rosso, not that it bothered me on the contrary I love such scenes that come out of nowhere and the one in Next of Kin was really great. I'd like to know if Deep Red was an inspiration for you or maybe your scene was an intentional homage to Argento? Or is it just pure coincidence?

Thanks for providing that for us. 🙂
Can you please verify that the film's aspect ratio is 2.35
It seems pretty obvious that it is (from viewing the VHS) and many sites offering dvds are listing it as 1.78 or 1.85
Thanks for crafting a film with a nice sense of style and strong cinematography. Shakycam is the leading killer of modern horror.

                So did Lance die?
"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
                "Didn't he discover America?"
                "Penfold, shush."

Why would they cut that out? The films only 85 minutes, and it seems odd to take out a scene like that when they could have edited out a scene earlier in the film. Did they change their minds and want Lance to live?
