To attack a human, the Thing needs critical mass. The Palmer chunks are only dangerous if you accept the single cell infection theory, which I don't. So I guess Mac did the right thing.

Duplicate itself? What do you mean exactly? There is no evidence in the movie for duplication, and the Thing cannot gain mass from nothing, only from absorbing victims.

I think it was Edward deVere that suggested a theory long ago, there's a good chance the facility would have some vermin and/or insects.
Which makes sense. When large shipments of food are brought in, it would be pretty difficult to ensure all food pallets, large bulk food sacks, etc. would be completely free of bugs, mice, etc. And since they stored them inside the facility, no threat of freezing. So there's a reasonable chance tiny creatures as hosts are there at the facility. After the big blast? Who knows.One of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces.

I had the same thought.
There are too many inconsistencies around the power of the Thing. It’s established that it can separate into multiple smaller pieces, and MacReady says we need to ‘warm this place up’ because it will now try to hide in the ice and wait for the rescue team.
So why doesn’t it just immediately head out into the ice? It could have sent a segment (like Norris’ head) off to bury itself in the ice while the rest of it tries to assimilate the team.
And why would blowing it up destroy it? Yes, portions of it would be incinerated but there would be plenty of chunks that, much like the Thing-blood droplets, could separately travel into the ice, ready to infect whoever comes along. -

You are very stupid, so let me break it down simply for ya.
Palmer thing was vaporized by the TNT. There were no “droplets” left. Also the smaller a Thing is, the less intelligent it is. And Norris Thing’s head running off to be frozen would mean it would never be found. It wanted to be a frozen human for the rescue team to pick up. Thing-blood droplets are not capable of being found or assimilating anyone, it has to be of sufficient mass.
