            In the novel "Childhoods end" by Arthur C Clarke visiting aliens park their huge ships over all the major cities on earth and resist all communication to panic the inhabitants of earth before revealing their intentions.

              Yes! Though not a film that was probably one of the main instances of the hovering ships that was lodged in my brain Childhood's End is one of my favorite sci fi novels of all time too. Thanks!
