Isn't that scene just like something stupid people would do to greet aliens? I'm sure that there were other locations where some idiot city officials decide to have the band play Close Encounter's infamous tune. How embarrassing this scene is, not because of the poor quality of the band's effort, but because it is so like what people would really do. LOL!

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

      I thought the same thing.
I like the the from the Original BS Galactica. It would be perfect for greeting alien invaders.

I just saw this too. I hope it's kept in the new one. I doubt it, but I can dream.

Return of the Jedi and V were released the same year, only a month or two apart. So, while it's an interesting parallel, I doubt the V writers were consciously alluding to Jedi.

I agree that the scene could possibly have been inspired by Return of the Jedi. There are several little Star Wars moments in V, so why not?

Star Wars was very popular at the time and they felt it was appropriate. Also, maybe when the miniseries was written, that was the only theme they got permission for.

They were butchering the song, they could have used and butchered the E.T. theme song, it's another song stupid people would perform.

Star Wars's theme sounds more uplifting and hopeful, as well as reminding the audience of small rebel group vs big British speaking empire. It's also an ironic in-joke (as is "Space Invaders" only harder to justify and yet the use of the SW theme didn't entirely fail as a selection, especially as (a) it's an entertaining tune, and (b) the SW theme is a very long one and when used with Visitor after Visitor coming out of ships, it hit home very quickly how huge the implied alien army was.)
And, yeah, sci-fi or otherwise it makes sense that in "real life" someone would look at a then-popular movie Return of the Jedi was right around the bend, roughly 3 weeks away in fact. The use of the SW theme and the basic genre of sci-fi would be deemed sufficiently appropriate, though if the aliens really were aware of Earth culture and telecasts they should have seen episodes 4 and 5 and then wonder but given how quickly V sets up the Visitors as being pretty much invincible and a claustrophobic
                              threat
, the Visitors could figure out any number of sci-fi shows and not be bothered. Comparing real life news to sci-fi would have the same effect.
If nothing else, the use of the theme reeks "product placement" - something the 1983 original didn't really have.

I like how they used that song but I also laugh at how bad they play it. Lol they're terrible but that's what a high school band used to sound like back in the day. They seem to sound better today like the teachers have them practicing more. If you watch college football today, I even heard it used at the Rio Olympics, they play a lot of The Imperial March (Darth Vader's Theme) from The Empire Strikes Back. So it's still going on and it's not for Aliens. LMAO
