Why rated R? Funnier than the Jerk?

Fran the Prostitute is mostly nude, G-string, but goes up with Micheal to his hotel and sings "Duke of Earl" in her horrible voice, being very nude for extended shots driving Michael mad with lust and insane from her squeeky voice.
No way it would be in a pg-13 movie even today. Plus, Martin says "I can't funk a gorilla."
Saw it last night.
Nothing, tra-la-la! -

It is a lot darker than his other movies; the idea of the current wife tried to cook the brain of his dead wife. That was pretty damn sick. The reason they gave black comedy an R rating because it was to macabre as far as the humor went.

The brain is not his dead wife. We see Kathleen Turners boobs about 3 times, fran is very naked. Why wouldn't it be rated R? This is my favorite Steve Martin movie, maybe you should actually watch it before you comment.

Exactly. As I understand it, you can say, "This is beeping weird," and only get a PG rating (so long as you only say it once.) But if you say, "I can't beep a gorilla," that's an R rating. In other, cleaner words, the adverb is PG but the verb is R.
I mean, compared to most of today's R movies (and PG-13 movies as well), TMwTB is quite tame. Extremely tame, I would say. But it uses the F word as a verb, and therefore, we are forewarned, it is Necessitur um , necessarily an R movie. -

In addition to above mentioned nudity, there are bare breasts shown during Kathleen Turner's brain surgery "Give me a little sweat on the upper lip Ok, remove sweat Get that cat out of here Cover her breasts. I'm a man, flesh and blood"
Funnier than the Jerk, no. But runs a close second. -

Sex was a major topic of this movie. At least half of the plot revolves around Martin suffering from sexual frustration. I'm no expert on Martin's work, but it did seem to me far "blue"-er than most of his other major films. Given the time it was released, I wouldn't think the studio expected any thing other than a solid "R". I would probably expect a soft R by today's standards, just for adult themes alone.

Well for the boner in the hat scene, then Fran the prostitute's breasts and the line where Steve Martin's character says, "I can't beep a gorilla!"-these must be the reasons for rating it R in the USA also considering it was the early 80's.Still they could've easily added one scene or two with Kathleen Turner in nude justifying the rating.Anyway here in UK it's always been rated 15.
And to me this one is nothing compared to THE JERK simply 'cause the material of THE JERK was more sophisticated, one of the richest scripts ever written for comedy. -

I loved this movie. I love the Jerk alot. I watch the scene on loop in the Jerk with Carl Reiner saying "cut!" after the car flies of the cliff. But TMWTB is one of the funniest movies ever. Bar none. No other comments apply.
-No, it's pronounced "azaleas"
