Sex was a major topic of this movie. At least half of the plot revolves around Martin suffering from sexual frustration. I'm no expert on Martin's work, but it did seem to me far "blue"-er than most of his other major films. Given the time it was released, I wouldn't think the studio expected any thing other than a solid "R". I would probably expect a soft R by today's standards, just for adult themes alone.

Well for the boner in the hat scene, then Fran the prostitute's breasts and the line where Steve Martin's character says, "I can't beep a gorilla!"-these must be the reasons for rating it R in the USA also considering it was the early 80's.Still they could've easily added one scene or two with Kathleen Turner in nude justifying the rating.Anyway here in UK it's always been rated 15.
And to me this one is nothing compared to THE JERK simply 'cause the material of THE JERK was more sophisticated, one of the richest scripts ever written for comedy. -

I loved this movie. I love the Jerk alot. I watch the scene on loop in the Jerk with Carl Reiner saying "cut!" after the car flies of the cliff. But TMWTB is one of the funniest movies ever. Bar none. No other comments apply.
-No, it's pronounced "azaleas"
