I can't believe Burt Reynolds turned this down for Stroker Ace. I liked Nicholson, but Reynolds would have went to town with this role and it was written with him in mind. No doubt Burt is kicking himself to this day for that decision.

This was on again last night. I bet Burt Reynolds does regret turning this down, he would have been great in the role. And remember both Shirley and Jack won Oscars. One of my favorite sad movies.

Burt has said in many interviews that this was the biggest regret in his career in not accepting the role.

I agree. I do love Jack Nicholson, but Reynolds would undoubtedly rocked this part!

I can't even understand why he turned it down. Debra Winger was white hot in Hollywood at the time, Shirley MacClaine brought the gravitas.
He probably would have made a great Garrett though Nicholson did really well. He just didn't look like he ever could have been an astronaut.
