Does anyone feel he needn't have given his life?, he could've tossed the bomb onto the bridge from his position, without

I don't think he counted on the charges he had planted to go off like they did.
My perception was that he meant to throw the satchel charge and shoot it to blow up that section of the bridge
The charges he set the night before that didn't go off when he exclaimed "damn/lousy caps" managed to go off with the satchel charge
Again, just my perception -

He didn't die. You don't actually see his dead body, right? He was thrown clear of the explosion and landed in the river. He was found the next day and made a POW. 10 years later Uncommon Valor II: It's All About Blaster happened. The guys went back for Blaster. They smuggled their weapons in by stashing them in the legs of their walkers and Rascal Scooters. They didn't need MacGregor's money this time, as they had a full sponsorship from Geritol and Depends.
Build a man a fire, he is warm for the night. But set a man on fire.

I totally expected him to jump off the bridge after he got up and threw the satchel charge instead he sprayed that jeep and then got blown the eff up. Even if he hadn't expected the caps to go off why stay on the bridge?!

If Blaster had jumped off the bridge. The blast of the explosion would have most likely have killed him.
Also there was that gun boat that showed up. The gun boat could have also have killed Blaster. They didn't know that there was a gun boat at the camp. The gun boat caused them a lot of trouble. The gun boat shot down one of the helicopters.
And in truth. It might have been the blasting wire that Blaster used was at fault and not the blasting caps. The wire wasn't delivering the electric charge to the blasting caps. But the explosion from the satchel charge set off the caps and the rest of the explosives on the bridge. -

Yeah, Blaster just needed to jump off the bridge. No need to sacrifice himself.
I was really bummed when Blaster and Sailor died. Everyone should've lived in the end - all those characters were too likeable!
You know back before the war broke out I was a saucier in San Antone
