Just a poll but does anyone else think that compared to "one man army" movies like "Rambo II" and "Missing In Action" this this movie does a great job at portraying the P.O.W. raid as realistically as it could be?

I know this is an old thread and no one has posted on it for over a year bu I want to make a comment.
This movie, without a doubt, is the best of the 80s Vietnam vets back in action [to rescue POWs] Genre. I think it acheives it because it is the only one that is actually trying to be serious. All the Chuck Norris and Stalone picks pail in comparison. (With the possible exception of "First Blood" the only other serious 80s action flick that I can think of.)
All the characters are well executed and the plotline is supurb and even believable. Who cried when sailor dies? The scenery is supurb, the extras, the number of Laotian troops and the realism put in to them, the combat scenes, the way they organized the mission I liked it all. -

I can't comment on whether it is accurate with regards to how the US Army would plan an execute such a raid; but it is credible in many respects from a general soldiering perspective. Well, short of picking up a chainsaw and cutting 'people' [targets] in half!
The US did plan - and execute - Song Tay by crashing a helicopter into a POW camp, deserted as it transpired, so the basis of a stealthy approach, taking out the guard posts, cutting the MSR and evacing is feasible.
Each operation is different, in the UK we dont have set mission templates which must be used for a given target. In general, tactical planning is devolved to the unit conducting the mission. When the UK went into Sierra Leone, it was a joint SF/Paratroop mission utilising helicopters. The events portrayed in UV could be accomplished much the way they were, or using the tactics adopted in Sierra Leone. Both are equally effective, depending on the tactical situation. -

Only war veterans and those properly trained would be able to put a plan into action. Our government wanted to forget about the war and anyone and anything that might be left behind. As for going in and trying, I think any red blooded American who cared would do it.

I usually skip war movies because they make me roll my eyes with their silliness. This one was good because it showed the pros and cons from all the different points of view. It also showed the supreme sacrifice of everyone involved. The family who helped the rescuers basically lost all of the adults (father, sons, daughter) either helping the Americans or trying to help themselves. But they were brave and courageous to the end.
I especially appreciate how the movie didn't force a love scene or a romantic relationship between the Vietnamese woman and the US soldier. So many movies have been ruined by that. Instead, they seemed to become friends, until the soldier got himself blown up.
No two persons ever watch the same movie.
