I agree. She could have at least TRIED to lower her voice. She did sound like a woman. I thought that is was weird with the whole seduction thingespeciall when Hadas started to fall in love with BarbraI still loved the movie and the music though.
Lorelai:The government will close that day.Barbra Streisand will give her final concert again.

In addition to the voice thing (which I also noticed):
Out of curiosity - did it bother anyone else that Barbra had lots of eye makeup on the whole time she was supposedly incognito? Why would she do that? Was she trying to ensure that the audience still found her feminine?
I thought her eyes were the most difficult part of Barbra's appearance to overlook. I think the transformation could have been much more convincing if she had left them alone.

movie buff 99 - I hadn't thought about the eye makeup - you're right. The whole thing was just too silly! But, the music and Mandy were soooo lovely.
I also had to laugh outloud at your quote! Who is the man that is a like an Orlando Bloom Sundae smothered in Johnny Depp sauce? lol!! Guess I'll see if I can find the quote on line!
        Happy 2007!

I totaly agree about the eyes, i just saw this movie for the first time tonight and i must say she is way WAY to girlie with that voice and those eyes. I was saying to my sister that it really bugs me in movies when they expect the audience to just ignor such things. They know it is stupid but they do it anyway! where is the realism?.??

If I recall correctly, they are talking about this guy:
              http://www.imdb.com/board/20747653/
Although, personally, I think he is less hot than either Orlando Bloom or Johnny Depp 😛

I have not seen the movie yet, but from my understanding, from watching interviews with Barbra and reading about the movie and such, it is supposed to be from Yentle's point of view - the story, the movie. It isn't so much as a bystander's movie, but an insight kind of movie. You're going through her life as Yentle sees it, which is why Yentle sings as a woman.
Additionally, it could be because Barbra sings the way she wants and nobody is going to tell her to do otherwise haha. But the first reason is the main one, IMO.
Blockbuster online does not have this movie and I was really disappointed about that. I want to see it. Looks interesting

I liked this movie Barbra's voice was perhaps at its best in the alte 70s/early 80s I liked the music the plot the photography, the sets, costumes, etc.
But, Barbra is NEVER convincing as a boy aside from the voice and the eye make-up, the thing I found most distracting were the French-tip nails sorry, but little boys in Eastern Europe at the turn of the last century did not have long finger nails that would make Freddy Kreuger blush

I think the OP was referring to her speaking voice. She doesn't even try to lower it. It's distracting, along with her makeup. She should have just gone without and shown her ruggedness, but then again Barb likes to portray herself as a goddess Her singing voice was all wrong for the time period too.

The one instant that makes her voice really stand out is at the very end on the boat the way she takes one HUGE breath and sings "Papa, watch me fly".and it seems she likes holding that one note for a really long time.
THAT, dear friends, is from a highly trained voice.
