I haven't seen the movie but by the sounds of things, it angers me greatly that Mandy Patinkin didn't sing. He has such a beautiful voice! He was amazing in Sunday in the Park with George! I do, however, want to see Yentl badly! I want to see for myself how good it is.

mandy does have a great voice and it is sad that he never got to sing. babs' could have let him do a duet or something with her.

I just wanted to say that when Barbra made Yentl she didnt want it to be a musical the Bergmans.. her good friends and composers of the score, convinced her that it would be an easier sell if it was a musical starring Barbra Streisand she thought it would ruin the integrity of the film, which in my narrow opinion(I do love Barbra) it does not the reason Mandy does not sing is because Yentl/ Anshel(Barbra) only sings her/his thoughts when she/he is alone she is hiding many big secrets and she cannot share them with anyone or else she would have been killed.Mandy hadnt any secrets I agree though that Mandy has an amazing voice and would have been an asset to the scoring of the film too bad it just didnt fit

I hate to butt in here but I must correct you on your statement that Havgdor(Mandy) had no secrets. He had a huge secret and it destroyed his life when it was discovered by his future father -in-law who forbade his daughter to marry him. Remember.his brother committed suicide, thus exposing a strain of meloncholy running through his blood-line.

I would have prefered it without the singing. I thought th story was fabulous and was bored whenever she was singing. I like Barbra's singing but it wasn't necessary here.

I agree that it's a travesty to have Mandy in a movie with music and not have him sing. HOWEVER, I just re-watched this movie today, and honestly, Babs isn't the reason I love it. It's all about Mandyhe's just so damn goodlooking in this movie, and intense and intelligent. And his eyeswell, to quote another Mandy vehicle, "you drown inside the eyes." Oh my. swoons I think shortchanged is a bit of an overstatement in this movie, since he was filmed so favorably. Mmmm.

Mandy sings!!!!! Lord have mercy! He sings and is sooo good looking! Damn Barbara! I just watched this movie and I was so tired of Barbara's singing. It would have been a pleasure to hear Mandy.

What a cliche that because an actor sings he must have a singing part, regardless if it is a movie with music, since YENTL is not a musical. Does this mean that Bette Midler had to sing in all her movies, or Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers to dance in all their movie appearances? And what about actors without singing careers? Then Joaquin Phoeniz and Reese Witherspoon had no business with Walk the Line, and Sissy Spacek had no business with Coal Miner's Daughter. Frank Sinatra is the best crooner of our lifetime and he won an Oscar for his non-singing role in From here to Eternity. It is wonderful for actors to branch out beyond some of their talents; I am very sure that Mandy Patinkin was extremely pleased to show his dramatic chops without having to exploit his musical talents.

OK, I think you took my post a little too seriously. First of all, I wouldn't consider the chance to sing a duet in a big budget movie musical with Barbra Streisand "exploiting" my musical talents. I think that's a really bad way of putting it. And no, I don't think Bette Midler has to sing in all of her movies and I didn't expect Fred Astaire to tap in all his movies either, I'm just saying that it is really difficult to cast a musical in this day and age and I would think that when Babs found herself a leading man with the musical abilities of Patinkin, it would have been nice to see her take advantage of that. Yeah, I understand she didn't want it to be a musical, but that stuff about Yentl being the only one allowed to sing was purely an ego thingas a previous poster said, Havigdor had his share of secrets and musical inner dialogues about his inner secrets and his confusion about Yentl would have been just as effective as "Papa can You Hear Me?". As much as I love Barbra and her work, this, to me, was clearly an example of her ego run amok.

So.was Clint Eastwood guilty of an 'ego run amok' for having starred, directed, and produced "Unforgiven"?
No? Guess Steisand was right when she said "In Hollywood, a woman can be an actress, a singer, a dancer..But don't let her be too much more."

Barbra was casting a nonsinging part, and she used a singer for that. Once again, you are being blind, ignorant, a walking cliche and the main reason of what is wrong with today's moviegoer.

Mandy was also very supporting of every decision his director made, did it ever cross your mind that he was thrilled to be asked to play a dramatic role in a movie where the script only demanded singing from its main protagonist?

Has Mandy sung in a movie? Because for years I thought he had sung in Yentl. Just the other day I watched Yentl for the first time since I was a kid and at the end I said, "Hey, what happened to Mandy singing?" I guess I was remembering him from something else, but I can't recall what it was. It's funny because for years I've had this memory of beautiful Mandy Patinkin singing in this movie.
I must say even though he didn't sing I still love this movie.
