Fully agree with you. As far as I was concerned the 86 movie was the Transformers finale. The Autobot Decepticon rivalry just never seemed balanced after that.
Exactly. I mean once Unicron was defeated to have Galvatron and Co. just go on like nothing had happened was just anti-climatic. A friend of mine also pretty much considers the movie to be the series' big ending. And it makes sense, I mean the movie ups the stakes with characters actually getting killed in a war, etc., but then we go on to the 3rd season and back to the old "no one gets killed" rule? It doesn't make sense, lol. 😉

No way they could've done that with our beloved Gen 1 season 1 & 2 characters.
On the contrary, I actually think they could have handled mature stories a lot better than the jump the shark third season characters did. But agree to disagree. 🙂

However they should've at least thrown us a bone & kept on at least 4-5 familiar Autobots & Decepticons we could relate to + watch develop with the newer bots.
I'm sure that had the writers had control over that, then they would have. But due to certain matters they had little say in (Scatman Crothers dying, Casey Kasem quitting, Hasbro forcing them to replace certain old characters with new toys), they had no option but to put most of the few classic Bots that survived the movie to rest. I see it as something of a miracle that guys like Grimlock, Blaster, Perceptor and Soundwave, not to mention Starscream were still allowed not only to show up but have entire episodes built around them.
          Well, I guess Kasem quitting
          was
          partly their fault

I think the toys for those characters were still available in stores when Season 3 aired. They're pictured in the 1986 Transformers toy catalogue. Starscream, Soundwave (with Buzzsaw), Ravage, Rumble, Frenzy and Bumblebee were the only toys from the initial 1984 releases to be pictured in the 1986 catalog. Many of the 1985 releases were also in the 1986 catalogue, with the exceptions being Shockwave, Grapple, Inferno, Hoist, Skids, Red Alert, Tracks, Smokescreen and the Jumpstarters.

Any info on the availability of the toys of Jazz and Cliffjumper? Were they only written out due to what had happened to their voice actors, or would they have done away with them anyway?

Jazz and Cliffjumper weren't in the 1986 toy catalogue.

Season 1 is still king for me. There were several mini story arcs & even when they were wrapped, we'd still see carry over plot points dotting the season. Capped by the Dinobots, Insecticons, & Devastator, season 1 is all I really need.
Season 2 was simply too many characters & not enough meat on the bones. I really liked the Omega Supreme, Constructicons, Stunticons, & Aerialbots origins, but the rest felt too watered down.
Season 3 was easily the most unique & concise of them all, alas the brutal animation logic (characters they killed off in the movie kept popping up). Not to mention the sunny blue skied disposition of the show was gone- replaced by dark alien beings & outer space nonsense (oh look, yet another new planet, no larger than a parking lot).

Actually, I agree. Season 3 definitely had a straighter storyline. Seasons 1 & 2 were okay, but they felt more like filler to me.

Season 1 & 2 are magical, season 3 sucks in comparison. The decision to kill off all the best characters and the reason why the show was so popular in the movie is one of the worst decisions in movie making history. Had they not done that the franchise would've remained popular. All they had to do was start a 2nd TV series set in the future that came on after the original show. That would've kept the popularity. The only thing cool about season 3 is how most the episodes take place on Cybertron or in some part of outer space. I wanted to see the original guys get more episodes like that. I was completely disappointed with the 86 movie and season 3. To this day it pisses me off. Lol
