Absolutely he was.
Back in the day, I had one of the comics with character bios & attributes; strengths & weaknesses for each G1 character.
Megatron's weakness:
'Megatron has no known weaknesses'
. That was pretty cool when I first read it.
(Optimus Prime's weaknesses for context include empathy & honour, or something, that can place him or his allies in harms way. If he's too 'nice', it doesn't help in battle.)
I dunno, that was like 30yrs ago lols. -

I've just checked both of their tech specs on TFU and here it is as follows
Megatron
Strength - 10
Intelligence - 10
Speed - 4
Endurance - 8
Rank - 10
Courage - 9
Firepower - 10
Skill - 9
Galvatron
Strength - 9.5
Intelligence - 8.5
Speed - 9
Endurance - 10
Rank - 9
Courage - 9
Firepower - 9
Skill - 10
So technically Megatron's a bit stronger, but he's also the more tactical of the two. -

He was a number of characters with a strength of 10, if that is what you are referring to (physical strength), but there are other characters who are likely stronger even though they also have strengths of 10. Optimus Prime has a strength of 10 and he and Megatron are reasonably evenly matched in physical fights, though quite a few episodes suggest that Grimlock is stronger than Optimus Prime.
Then most of the combiners (starting with Devastator) have strengths of 10 and are much larger, so they are likely stronger than Megatron. Finally, Metroplex and Omega Supreme are both 10 but their tech specs describe what they can do - Omega Supreme can flatten mountains -

Unfortunately, some of the early toys, came out before the Combiners and the cities
By placing Megatron, Optimus Prime, & Grimlock at a 10, on a scale up to 10 Kind of messes things up for newer characters later on.
Sorry, Hasbro, you can't tell me, that Omega Supreme is on the same level of strength as Optimus Prime I also remember the times when ALL the Dinobots fought Devastator, and Devastator still kept fighting.
Since the Combiners and the cities were at least twice as large as the regular characters, I always treated any Tech Specs that listed a 10 for the Combiners and the cities as 20 ("2"x10) or more.
And what about the planetoid: Unicron? There is NO WAY, that Megatron, Optimus Prime, & Grimlock had the same strength as Unicron
