absolutely not the greatest, you forget beethoven who is also born at that period, beethoven is considered to be greater than him about contribution and achievements in classical music since mozart was dead at a young age.

So many criteria, I'm not sure how debatable this subject is. Liszt is considered the greatest pianist of all time. Beethoven was a perfectionist who labored for nine years on his 5th? symphony. Doubtful he was ever completely happy with his work. Mozart won in the facility department. His output was phenomenal. He was also more of a natural showman. Beethoven's father saw what happened with Mozart and tried to capitalize on his son's talent by lying about his age and dragging him around to perform. Beethoven loved music deeply but it wasn't nurtured like it should have been.
Beethoven is my favorite composer. The pain in his work speaks to me in a way that no one else's does. Mozart is a close second. Both of them played an irreplaceable part in music and Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 is a brilliant piece.
Disliking a character is not a sign of moral turpitude.

I too was fooled at first when reading this message. If Amadeus was a genius musician than K_kugelis is a genius troll. I take my hat off to you, K_kugelis

How Gym Class Heroes were described along with the way he/she spelt completely, outstanding.

Bob Dylan - without a shadow of doubt is the Amadeus of contemporary music. Then there are the rest - salieri's if you will.

I hear, in certain circles, they think Eric Clapton is GOD.
Is that good enough for your list?

I think in terms of musical genius, The Beatles.
In terms of a child prodigy, Michael Jackson.
I'd love to see both of those movies.

From a pure musical genius standpoint, only one (relatively) modern musician comes to mind when thinking of Mozart, and that's Tom Scholz.

Lennon McCartney, Hendrix, Page, Dylan, Mercury, or Clapton. Maybe Andrea Bocelli. Probably missing other possible candidates but I'm high so I've hit my ceiling with names

McCartney and Page for sure but no they aren't actual geniuses just musical ones. Mozart was probably an actual genius and obviously McCartney and Page and Lennon weren't savants but genius in their own right. Lennon McCartney probably even had a better run than Mozart. They are arguably two of the most important musicians in the history of music. In 500 years Lennon McCartney will have the same stature as Mozart. I think Mozart is especially more posthumous because of the amount of time that has passed and how his reputation has permeated through the centuries. For all we know half the things we think we know about Mozart are tall tales. Definitely one of the most important musicians in history but I don't like how people think he's a God when nobody was actually there to experience it. People develop god-like and larger than life perceptions through word of mouth over the centuries. Hendrix is comparable to Mozart in terms of his prodigious talent on the guitar. He could play it upside down, behind his back, with his teeth and was an absolute pioneer in rock music. It's not sinking in now but Sgt. Peppers is am absolute landmark in the history of music. Stairway to heaven by led zeppelin is a comparable composition to one of mozarts it's just evolved music. I like classical music but rock and roll can be just as sophisticated, it's just a very different style.

Ok bud, now go roll out your mat and do your daily worship of Mozart. To think that there is nothing as good as mozarts music today is just idiotic and far too biased. I like Mozart and I acknowledge his greatness but I also have the open mindedness to recognize there are other musical geniuses in our day. If all your listening to is Mozart in this day and age then there's your problem.

Are you serious? Which modern artists are as good as Michelangelo? Andy Warhol maybe? Which modern writers are as good as William Shakespeare? Jacqueline Susann maybe? Get a grip, almost nothing of contemporary corporate American culture will be remembered centuries from now. But if people are still alive, Mozart will be known.
