The first was good but I know the others were not written by Stephen King and were mostly direct to DVD release. Were any of the sequels good enough to watch for two hours or should I just read the plot summary?

Of the sequels, I liked 2 and 5. I've heard good things about 4 though.
You could get by with the plot summaries if you want. The second takes place directly after the events of the first, and there are winks and nods to the original going down the line. The sixth takes place I think 19 years after the first and tries to pick up where things left off from there.
There's a lot of time jumping, but if you want to see them, I don't think any harm would come out of it. Some of them should be on Netflix or Youtube if you're curious.
Our songs will all be silenced, but what of it? Go on singing.

I enjoy them all but Part 3 is the absolute best. It is just as good if not better than the first.

I've only seen 2 and it was ok.

After the original, The Gathering (part 4) is my personal favorite of all the sequels. Love how it works as both a COTC film and a standalone entry as well. 2 and 3 are great sequels as well (both are great fun to watch and definitely better than most of the others in the series). Each sequel has something I enjoy about them, but 4, 2 and 3 are probably the best of the lot.

Most, if not all, of the sequels are barely 90 minutes. But they are watchable enough.
Part 2 suffers from the atrocious acting but has some fun, and funny, death scenes. Plus OTT gore effects.
Part 3 benefits from a change of local. And the, older, lead guy is hot. And there's some extremely gross violent moments to enjoy.
Part 4 is fairly crap. It suffers from the appearance of Karen Black and never really recovers. There are some violent deaths tho.
Part 5 is slightly better. There are some nice acting parts here (Eva Mendes, Bill from Kill Bill) and the murders are HEINOUS.
I don't believe I've seen part 6. But part 7 (Revelations) is good, because it's mostly unrelated to the previous films.
I believe the made for telly remake movie came next which is not as good as the original. But Mr Sark is in it so yay!
Finally I believe there's a children of the corn subtitled Genesis which I haven't seen.
So, in summary, you could do a whole heck of a lot worse.
Oh, yeah and that guy from Glee is in part 4 as is Naomi Watts. But that doesn't make them any good.
Part 5 also features Alexis Arquette and he (/she?) is actually quite good. Also Dan from season 2 of Charmed is in part 5.
Also in part 5 there's a-not-nearly-big-enough cameo from some stunt guy called Kane as a barman.
Part 7 features Crystal Lowe from such films as Black Xmas, Wrong Turn 2, Final Destination 3.

It could be the third part you're referring to
Malcolm the black kid gets his entire (far too long) spinal column cord extracted and transformed into a grotesque scarecrow
