I see that this is an old post but I'll reply anyway.
Definitely see Conan the Barbarian as it is the quintessential sword & sorcery film. Conan the Destroyer is DRASTICALLY different (as well as inferior) in tone and substance when compared to it's predecessor. It's a fun throw away Schwarzenegger film but in no way does it provide you with the same richness and grandeur that Conan the Barbarian does. Even though Destroyer is a watered down, silly, and disappointing followup to Barbarian it's still miles ahead of the dreadful new Conan the Barbarian with Momoa.
I guess the best way to put it is thisConan the Destroyer is like masturbation without the payoffwhereas Conan the Barbarian is a threesome with two of the hottest women in the worldWatch Destroyer if you've enjoyed the original but don't expect much out of it.

I haven't been into the comics; but what I have seen of them and when I watch Destroyer, It feels like it has made a concerted effort to capture the spirit and imagery of them. Both are worth seeing and enjoyable for their own reasons Destroyer is the snappier, breezier film.
I am pleased that Destroyer has a different tone than Barbarian and this makes it unique in it's own right. Did fans just want to see the same film as the first again? That was a one of a kind.

I became a conan fan when I was a kid, i saw destroyer first and I of course liked it, and then I saw barbarian and I thought this is one is better lol, and I've seen the remake of conan the barbarian several times and it is actually more balls to the wall badass than the original
