Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Heimat: A Chronicle of Germany

Saw this years ago on BBC as a teen, was amazed by it and had thought I'd like to see it again. I rented the first 3 dvd's and watched it in two 4 hour stints over two nights it's fabulous. I had only caught the more modern times before, can't wait to re-live that, but the early years are fascinating. Loved the cinematography, the stories, the claustraphobia of village life, interchange between colour and B&W. I have stayed in the Eifel and travelled from Koblenz to Trier so was fascinated by the references, and to see Trier in a film was a lovely surprise.
I found Lucie so bloody annoying though! 'Also, die Lucie, die Lucie' .. argh, if I hear that one more time, and her voice and her laugh and her snobbery .. I didn't even feel sorry for her when the accident happened I hope to see the last 3 dvd's soon and maybe her come-uppance who knows !
I'm surprised there aren't any messages here ..

Agree with "issss", I expected lots of comment on Heimat.
I have spent a lot of time in Germany over the years. We had an office in Dusseldorf but I understood more about the country after watching the series than 25 years of visiting.
I was glued to the screen during the first showing on tv and expected the repeat series to be a bit of an anti climax. If anything it is better. Can't wait for the 3rd series. Incidentally, homage was paid in "The Land Girls", (a much underrated film imho), when the scene in which the plane flew over and dropped the flowers was borrowed.

And that's where the power lies in this most extraordinary and sublime feat of film making. I simply cannot fault it.
          11/10
          without hesitation

Like isss I watched the whole series as a teen growing up in Toronto. Since then I've been to Germany often and, like the preceding poster, learned as much about Germanay from seeing Heimat as from all of my German classes at University or my time in the country. So much history has been wiped out by the shame of WW2 most of it for a good reason, but it's good to be reminded of what really happened.
