    I wish he was in the movie more, maybe even taken along with Indy. He's essentially just a dues ex machina for the ending.

      He also helped develop dinner table discussion concerning British colonialism and Thugee history. He gave an appropriate and convenient balance to the table.

          Maybe if David Niven had played him (as was the original plan) he would've had more screen time.

            What I don't get is why did Indy ever venture down into the temple when he knew that a platoon of British soldiers were not too far away. My only guess is if the British were involved they might take the stones and Indy wanted them.
