Freddy seemed like a nice guy at first

You may be onto something. I mean he got kicked by a stranger and the very next minute was up and brushing himself off and being all friendly as if he had been given a gift instead of being knocked to the ground.
Very good. But brick not hit back! -

You meet a guy who claims to know Karate and promises to teach you some moves.
The next day, said guy gets his ass whooped on a beach and displays all the Karate skills of an eggplant.
Would you still be friends with this douche you've known for 24 hours and who has told nothing but lies from the moment you met him? -

OMG I'm in tears over this thread.
Seriously though, Freddie came off very desperate to be Daniel's friend. I mean if some guy knocked me in face first into a door I wouldn't too keen on inviting him over to a beach party. The way he dissed him at school the next day proves he was a fake and just going along with the gang. He was a total waste and unsupportive "friend" to Daniel.

"Fair Weather" Freddy Fernandez was just an acquaintance, not a friend.
Freddy was in the crowd at the karate tournament cheering for Daniel. After Daniel won Freddy and some other guys picked him up and carried him. -

Freddy probably had high hopes for Daniel too. He was thinking "This guy is a karate master, when he whips Johnny's ass on the beach he'll be a legend, and I'll be his best friend!".
Major disappointment for Freddy when Daniel got beaten to a bloody pulp. -

Freddy knew nothing about Karate and after Daniel when he 1st meets him smacks the door against him assumes he is a cool guy and wants to be friends with him. After Johnny beats Daniel up he realises that Daniel can not fight properly and basically the friends give up on him

An additional scene with Freddie at any point in the middle of the film would have made for a nice bridge from all we know in his opening scenes to him being at the tournament and cheering on Daniel. Since they did live in the same area, it makes sense that they would have seen each other (or school) and still interacted at any point prior to the December tournament. That was a good 3-4 months of time! They had to have hung out, talked, etc.
seems like Freddie being at the tournament is motivated by he and his friends wanting to see a good fight and for Johnny and Co. To go down.
So: a realistic, down to earth show..which is completely off the wall swarming with magic robots?! -
