Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — A Nightmare on Elm Street

One of the things I really enjoy about the original is how it feels like Freddy is a part of the real-world in the sense that in the nightmares, he chases the kids through their neighborhood outside, or chases them through their house on fire, or crashes through their mirror and assaults them in their bedroom.
In the sequels, it just seemed like nightmares usually reverted to the nightmare house, and while that house is creepy, I did miss the feeling of being chased and stalked in locations you thought were safe.

This exactly. The brilliance of this film is the fact that you don't know they are dreaming until something crazy happens or Freddy appears because they are in their normal houses and streets.
In the sequels it was pretty obvious almost immediately that they were dreaming. But then again the cat was out of the bad and everyone knew that Freddy killed you in your dreams. The original had the element of surprise. I agree with you.
I actually didn't like the nightmare house. I loved the boiler room from the original. It was so tight and easy for Freddy to trap you.
      Haters gonna hate

They dropped it because of the popularity of dream warriors fantasy comedy aspect so with the that one an the rest after they just kept increasing the fantasy so the dreams stopped with the real locations an went with over the top

It wasn't always in that house..
In #3 Freddy came into the hospital to kill Jennifer with the TV, the guy with the puppets (Phillip??), and Joey with the Nurse turning into Freddy. Taryn in the alley, I think? (Those lips smacking on her arms was creepy!)
In #4 Freddy showed up at the beach with Kristen (which I thought was hilarious when Freddy put on the sunglasses!) he chased her into that quick sand. Freddy came into the school to kill Sheila using her asthma ("Wanna suck face?" Creepy), he went into Debbie's house and chased her after turning her into a cockroach, etc..
Also, I think they went into that house because, didn't Freddy live in that house at one time? In #1 Nancy's Mom brought Nancy down to the basement to show Nancy Freddy's glove that she had hidden in there.
