    A) is way way WAY too good looking (and too young) for Harry Dean Stanton's character and
    B) cannot suppress her German accent.
I still loved the movie, and I really enjoy her as an actress (despite the accent issue). And I do realize that their love story and intense attraction for each other despite the age difference is explained at the end of the movie. But for the first half of the film, knowing nothing about the nature of their relationship, I just kept thinking, really? How would a guy like that ever land a girl like her?

Actually, she was cast by her fellow German director Wim Wenders who landed her Probably a few times during production of this film.

Same here. It required way too much of a leap of faith to believe Jane was ever attracted to Travis, way too much. That fact alone dropped it a point or two.

I'm 21, but I would totally fall for Harry Dean Stanton's character in this film. Maybe Nastassja Kinski likes the whole rugged, unwashed, weather-beaten thing too.

Harry Dean Stanton was in a real life relationship with Rebecca De Mornay when she was 22 and he was in his mid 50s around the time they appeared in Coppola's 'One From the Heart' back in the early eighties. I would say it's not out of the realm of possibility for it to happen in this movie either then

I thought they looked good together. He was an older, experienced man. She probably found that attractive in him. Besides, not everyone places such importance on looks. I didn't question their being together at all really.

It was mentioned in the Criterion book supplement that she wrote a diary about her character (I think it was before she met him).

I did feel Kinski screwed up the accent a bit. Funnily enough it was during her little speech to Travis, Jane uses the word "conversation" and it comes across as more English than West Texas.
On the age difference while Stanton is 35 years older than Kinski, I felt the casting worked since I think we are supposed to think Travis was not that much older than Jane in the film. I say that because while Stanton looked his age during the time the main part of the film was set in, the video I think was intended to make him look younger relative to Jane. The hard living indicated that he went through before the film begins aged him. The casting worked since for the whole film other than the video Stanton was supposed to look the way he did.
So in short I think the characters in the film were not supposed to be 35 years apart. Maybe more like 20 to 25, which is still significant for some people, but also more plausible than 35, which after all is not really implausible.

I didn't realize she was German until after reading this post, so she convinced me. I assumed she was Eastern European by the name.
