Apparently younger people here dont quite understand this movie was 34 years ago and not all products you have now was around then..also being kids they might have chosen a coke over water The events were just happening out of the blue on just another daykinda hard to run thru a checklist

That's just it. People that didn't live during that time don't get that there wasn't nearly the selection of beverages there is today, in particular bottled water, save for a gallon or two of distilled water for your iron. Soda was about the only thing they could take that would last without refrigeration, especially from a mom and pop's store like that. He wasn't going to give them beer. LOL.

I remember vividly during baseball camp in the 80's, during breaks we were given Coke to drink. Not Gatorade or water, but Coke. One year, they switched to caffeine free Coke, saying it was healthier. I was watching and old Alabama/Tennessee game from the 70's, and a player was tackled out of bounds, and he ran into the beverage table. They were also drinking Coke, and I think I saw the coaches smoking on the sidelines too. So yes it was a much different time back then.

One of my early 80s little league coaches smoked, pretty much right in front of us. Half of our parents smoked so it wasn't like it was a big deal, but times are much different now.
We drank soda when playing sports, too, and water, of course. Water out of the tap or fountain, that is. We didn't really see Gatorade until the mid to late 80s in school sports.

My little league coach smoked in the dug out lol. Maybe we were on the same team. Reminded me of Jim Leyland of the Pirates, the last manager to smoke at a game. And yes I think it was the later 80's we saw the Gatorade start to being used a lot more. And you are also right about water from the tap, it was tap water or water fountain water. No bottled water. We also drank water from the garden hose too,

Ah, drinking from the hose. In addition to myself, I think every kid I knew drank from the hose during the summer. It was a much different time. The real hot days were the worst because even after you let it run to purge it of the hot water, it still had that hose smell. LOL. Those were the days!

I forgot about that first wave of hot water. I would get impatient and think it was out and take a swig and, nope still hot! I was surprised how much hot water could stay in a hose. And you are right, the smell was unique. I bet someone younger is reading this and can't believe we drank from the hose lol. And you had that one D bag who would hold the hose while you drank and then squirt you in the face with it.

I just thought the exact same thing. Product placement front and center! BUT if you think about what a 16 year old would grab when in a hurry they really would grab that thinking it was important. They might even pack pizza pockets and pop tarts before they packed 'real' food.

Agreed on a lot of these posts. I was 12 when this movie came out. Sure, there were a ton of different soft drinks, just like today, and Gatorade, but I never saw anyone carrying water bottles around like today (either purchased from the store or those stainless steel or plastic water containers).
We did, however, drink from the garden hose. A lot.

In 1984 the average gas station didn't carry bottled water or water containers. Milk would spoil Loading some soft drinks into a truck makes perfect sense if you are bugging out to a place where you are uncertain about natural water supplies.
