Jake would not leave his gorgeous blonde girlfriend for a plain Jane like Sam! As soon as Jake & Sam went to school as a couple everybody would laugh at him and think he was nuts!

Why wouldn't it happen? Early on in the movie, we know that Jake isn't shallow, and doesn't care about things like status and looks. He's looking for something more meaningful in a relationship. Plus, Sam was cute and quirky, and I think she was very pretty, in a totally different way than Carolyn.

I always wondered why Jake would bother to date Sam knowing he's graduating in a few months and most likely going to college the next fall while Sam still has two years of high school left. So why start something you know won't last?
Plus imagine the flak Carolyn would get from everyone for dating a freshman nerd.. -

Jake obviously digs girls who have just bloomed. After graduating and leaving Sam, he went out to Massachusetts and had a quickie with another teeny named Charlotte Flax.
