Wikipedia says they're "based on the wildcat" . . . but surely that's just wordplay than an actual species!?

A wildcat isn't a species. Maybe they're crossbreeds and not indicitive of any one kind of cat.

That's what I thought. As for the Kittens, well, I don't know.

I think WilyKat resembles a bobcat.

While there are indeed a wildcat species, i always assumed they were going with the basic house cat gone wild idea for the two little kid like thundercats
I refuse to argue on IMDB until the general populous actually uses their brains

I don't think they were based off of any cat to be honest. After all, even Panthro is an oddity if you think about it.
The term 'panther' can apply to the leopard, cougar or the jaguar depending on the conintent. It can even mean ALL Big Cats as it's the latin name for their (Panthera Leo, Panthera Tigris, Panthera Onca and Panthera Pardus), from the Greek 'panthir' which means 'to hunt all'.

I think they were the same kind of cat as Lion-O.A lion.
                  So it's treason then!

My best guess would be wildcats.

I have heard they are based on domestic house cats

I assumed that the Snarfs were based on house cats because they were smaller and more docile than the other Thundereans.
