After watching the thundercats over and over again i gotta say i think tygra was very overrated. I mean he could hold is own against mongor, safari joe, queen of 8 legs,Mumm-ra,Demolisher,Hammerhand,grune,Berzerkers,Shadowmaster. Even the lunataks would give tygra problems. Only the Mutants were no match for tygra. Lion-o always had to save tygra. To me tygra was VERY overrated

I remember one of the lead writers disliked Tygra, so that may have led to his treatment as the show's Male In Distress (Lion-O is the hero - he's the guy who saves everyone by the Sword of Omens dues ex machina of the episode, Panthro is the cool one, Cheetara is the girl), which I think is a pity because his focus episodes were among the most interesting. But Tygra did save himself - and Cheetara - by hijacking a giant bee. Which I thought made up for a lot of his mistakes just by the glorious absurdity of it.

A great character suffers cos as writer didn't like him?
Tygra is underrated agreed!
Tygra is second-in-command and also extremely intelligent, architect and scientist of the Thundercats and head of the council. Posessess a keen tactical and analytic mind. Where creators Ted Wolf and Leonard Starr described Panthro's character as being based on "strength" and Cheetara's character as being based on "speed," Tygra's character was described as being based on 'Integrity'.
Tygra clearly had alot going for him!

He was very underrated in this show. Even as a wee five-year-old, I saw him as the weakest of the lot, always needing rescued and barely memorable (Lion-O was the leader, Panthro was the strongest, the kids were the kids and Cheetara was a strong female warrior yet Tygra was nothing special). He's now my favourite in the new version, where his character is depicted in much stronger light.

The point was made, but it bears repeating; Tygra was an architect and innovator first and foremost. That he was also a very capable fighter was just a bonus. In truth, he might have been the most balanced of the four main Thundercats if you looked at him like, say, an AD&D character. His "attributes" were spread evenly.
