It wasn't an easy thing to go through, but I survived it. The good thing is now that I'm older, it's become more and more something that's in my distant past. So it's true that time can and does heal deep old wounds.

There's the difference between being punishing for doing something bad (a proper way to discipline kids under 18) and being abused violently.
I did stupid **** in the past I did get spanked or grounded, which I understood why they'd do that. But, I did get abused by my mother's ex husband (not my father, but my sister's father) occasionally. He even did the same to my sister and my mom. He mistreated all three of us, even though there were times he was a cool person. He did fool Mom and my sister, but he couldn't fool me so he knew I was basically a threat to him because I wasn't a stupid one. I prayed every day that Mom would divorce him for several years and my prayer has been answered when I was 13 when I finally get away from him. Fast forward six years later, he was there when I graduated from high school, he was there for me. Then I found out he asked my sister to take a trip with him to the different state to spend time with his family (they were awesome) and apparently, she got scared she asked him to take me with them (I doubt he was happy about that, but he obliged). So long story short, he never changed. He still treated me like ****. He wasn't as harsh to my sister, but yeah. She did go with him several years ago for thanksgiving without me, which had me worrying about her and I better not see her come home with bruises. Thankfully, he didn't lay a finger on her…..at least, that's what she said. That one time, I remember one of his relatives told me to be nicer to him. Oooh! That nerve. I'm sorry, but I won't do that.
I have a confession. I did try to kill him, twice.
I was tired of him doing the same **** over and over again. Mom's divorce with him saved me from having a criminal record. Thinking back, I was disgusted with what I attempted to do. Sigh….Good thing I didn't do that because here I am, being a responsible adult who is working on getting the bachelor's degree in Computer Science in the university and work almost 40 hours a week with a house under me with my roommate.
I hope a bear throw a book at you, moon at you, and do a tap dance wearing a thong and leather boots. -

No, other than an occasional swat on the bucket, which had good padding. I think they did an excellent job raising me, and I thank their memory every day.
