Miguel was gay.

Hogwash.
Romero isn't Joel and Ethan Coen.
Miguel may be effiminate when compared with the other deranged monkeys in his unit, but Cyclops makes good points about Rickles and Steele.
That being said, perhaps there was a benefit for Sarah using Miguel to get some muscle on her side and would give herself to Miguel to keep him sated. When she began to pity him so much that she couldn't even look on him except as an object of pity, then Miguel would have seen this and so fell into even deeper despair. Such is the way of a lot of relationships.
To be fair, you make a good point about mutual benefitting, but usually bearded relationships are to propel someone along in a liveable world. This is a nightmare one where people are hanging by a thread. -

I would think that only strengthens my view. They're stuck in a cave full of testosterone, and more than a couple psychos, and they're just trying to hang on. -

Interesting theory. I've certainly always gotten a bit of an effeminate vibe from Miguel but just chalked it up to either the actor being gay or being slightly effeminate, but it's entirely possible that you're correct.

I had never seen this part of the canon despite loving the first film. So I decided to give it a whirl despite the disappointment of fans for it. Upon first seeing the actor I thought, oh my, he's gay. Every moment he speaks or does his mannerisms it just reinforces my belief. It actually compelled me more to look it up here.

Never thought anyone was Gay or straight or whatever. I thought Sarah and Miguel were in a relationship before all hell broke loose but now the relationship was pretty much broken beyond repair. I think Steel, Rhodes and Rickles were loosing it at this point and "any hole would be a goal" for them regardless of sexuality.

During the initial scene where Sarah tried to get Miguel out of the helicopter it seems like Sarah was trying to hint him on keeping it together. Perhaps it is true that Sarah and Miguel initial joined together to protect Sarah from the other men by not being "available." It's also possible that since Miguel was part of the military order, it puts him in a better spot than if someone like Ted since he could easily pushed around.
Also it's fairly apparent that in Sarah's room, her cot could not contain two people. Matter of fact, it's very clear that Miguel slept on the floor while Sarah slept on the cot. When Miguel was awake, he watched Sarah as she had her nightmare and knew that they were both scared but Sarah just didn't want to admit it.
I don't think MIguel was gay but I do think he was a much different person before he snapped. I think he wanted to protect Sarah from the men. If you notice, right after Sarah kicked out Miguel, he went to the Army folks and they were all fighting. It's entirely possible that now they all thought she was up for grabs but Miguel got into a big fight. -

But then, there's the 'mystical', unknown powers of 'Gaydar' and the ancient saying 'It takes one, to know one'. Just another angle to all of this. Not as elaborate as some of the speculations here.

He's not gay. Just because he was weak doesn't make him gay. Straight men are weak to. Just because Fisher is a nice guy that is concerned for Sarah without having a sexual attraction to her doesn't make him gay either. Seriously, the implication is any man who is weak, pathetic, a mess etc is gay is silly. Also being gay doesn't make you "less" of a man. There are tough straight guys I know that would beep out if this happened

My opinion is the guy is gay in real life and a terrible actor. Even at the very beginning the way he screams, "HELLO!" he sounds like a homo. WOOOOoooooOOOOOooooooOOOOOoooooOOOOo! Gaydar on full alert!!!!

I don't think the character is supposed to be gay, no. I remember think what bad casting it was for the only "gay" actor to be the one to play the character with a girl friend. Of course, the actor may not be gay either..
