Geena Davis as a marginal character?

I don't understand how anyone could have that opinion of Costner. If Dances with Wolves was his only project, it would still be enough to give him more credibility in regards to directing and acting ability than most actors/directors get in thier entire career. Just a brilliant job at directing and acting and I don't care how lucky someone is in regards to picking roles, you don't pull off a directing job and an acting job like Dances with Wolves without having some serious talent. Hell, that movie alone won him 2 Ocsars including best picture and best director and he was nominated for best actor as well. In any other year, he would have won best actor along with best picture and best director. Unfortunately for him, Jermey Irons put forth a magnificent performance that year in Reversal of Fortune, which really robbed Costner of his trifecta at the Oscars.
All in all, Dances with Wolves won 49 awards and was nominated for 32 more. Again, had Costner simply directed and acted in this film and then retired, it still would have been more than most actors/directors accomplish in thier entire career's. The fact that he went on to be in many more successful films only cements the fact that he is extremely talented and did not just rely on the luck of quality roles to get him where he is today.

Regarding Larry/"Stretch" as the love interest: I don't buy it. Disclosure: I haven't read the book. I think Larry is there to show us that Fletch is well-liked/desired by the attractive, quirky gal at the office and, therefore, likely to be desired by any woman, more likely than not. I like to think that Irwin is not dumb enough to "sh!t where he eats"but given his efforts with Mrs. Stanwyk, that's a tough sell.
Ultimately, I think we see that Larry likes Fletch more than Fletch likes Larry. Based on my workplace experience, Fletch indulges her in order to keep her efficiently knocking out the gruntwork on his projectsand the itch on his back.

Yes, I take your point.
However, I think if Fletch had the opportunity to get Larry into the sack then he probably would. Just look at how he had his fling with Gail. Plus, there was the woman he recorded on to tape. -

I politely disagree. I think Fletch DID have the (ongoing) opportunity to get Larry in the sack. And, maybe he did at some point in the past and/or the futurebut I don't think so.
Gail Stanwyk was a "beautiful, wealthy woman" whom, under "normal" circumstances, may or may not give Irwin Fletcher the time of day. But, because of the circumstances, she is drawn to him.
Gold star for referencing the woman on tape a/k/a the classic "No, nevernever" bit!

Her character did seem to be attracted to Fletch. Geena Davis sometimes towers above some male actors. But she seems quite a bit shorter than Chevy Chase in this. Her character name of Larry is the first time that I've seen that name given to a female.
