Yes, the golden age of cable tv. HBO, played alot of these hidden 80s gems and gave it life.
If anyone remembers Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon, it wasn't a box office hit, but got serious playback on HBO and it gained a cult following.
If I recall they replayed this movie alot during the early to mid 90s. -

Your exactly right Back not long after it came out, like within a year or two it was played constantly on HBO. Seeing it again now it's like not much time has passed as I saw it so many times then. It was on multiple times per week over a couple of years back then. I'm sure it had to do with how much it cost HBO to get the rights to broadcast it. Pay cable was still in it's relative early days back then and they probably didn't have a huge library to pick from. Just like they always played Smokey and the Bandit on Showtime constantly in the early 80's.

Yes, if you come to think of it back then cable would pay for the exclusive broadcasting rights, and also they wasn't a vast library of movies to chose from so depending on what movie they had they would give it a heavy play time. It's a different time when after a movie's theatrical release, 6 months later it hits vhs, then about a year cable, then about a year and half to 2 years on broadcast tv.
Also consider there weren't dvds back then to show deleted or additional scenes most times films were shown on tv with additional or alternate cuts from their original version. -

^^^^Let the dog's loose!!!!!!!!!! LOL!
I remember in the early to mid-90's, HBO played this film almost every Sunday. Keep in mind, the major PAY-TV networks didn't feature R-rated films until after 8PM during this time and they had to pad about 12 HRS of PG & PG-13 rated films. -

I grew up in the 80s and definitely remember the frequent broadcasts. Just One of the Guys, Kidco, Cloak & Dagger - some movies were just like that. I loved them though, and I never tire of things I love. I wish HBO would bring
back
these lost gems, to be honest.
