Why does Rick say "1987?"

When Rick is asking Beth out and she says she busy, he asks if she's free any day in '1987' but the movie's set in 1985?
I've always wondered this.

Because she kept turning him down. This weekend, next weekend, etc. He decided to try for 2 years later and still failed.
