    Jesse wasn't "gay".
He was a "closeted gay" lol.
In all honesty he couldn't had been more gay than if his name were Gay Gayerson.

I do not understand why some people say Jessie is gay.
He wasn't gay. It's a myth perpetuated by gays and gay-obsessed people who read that
        into
the script; it's therefore an eisegetical interpretation.
Right out of the gate the movie shows that Jesse's interested in Lisa, ultimately 'fessing up to his love for her; and it's mutual. Despite Jesse's torment from Freddy increasingly trying to possess him, he still can't resist getting on the floor with cutie Lisa to make out at the pool party; and only stops because of Freddy manifesting the monster tongue. Jesse understandably freaks out and escapes to his best friend's house, Grady (who's grounded), and asks if he can stay the night while Grady keeps guard on him; he even warns Grady not to go to sleep because he might be possessed and do something evil, like murder.
The only legitimately gay element of the movie was the subplot about the homosexual gym teacher who hanged out at a S&M bar, which was revealed at the very beginning by Grady. Of course, the coach was slashed out of the story by the halfway point.

            Eisegesis
            is
an interpretation, as is your synopsis.

This film was incredibly homoerotic. The screenwriter even later admitted that it was intended.
Leather bars, mostly male nudity, a very camp dance scene nobody is
              that
              naive.

Considering everything else that went on in the movie, those lines were pretty clearly double entendres.

I don't know about the scriptwriter, but the director made it clear it was there if you looked for it. Unintentional, but it is there.

I think the fact the actor is gay has a lot to do with it. I'd also say there are many things that lead us to this conclusion throughout the film like the "No chicks" sign on the door, Jesse ending up at the gay bar (exploring his curiosity?), the dance scene, etc. Although they never explicitly state it, I think they wanted to lead us to that impression. I believe he eventually would've come out of the closet and still remained very good friends with Lisa, but obviously never anything more.

The actor that played Jesse, Mark Patton, was gay. It was deliberately implicit that there was a homoerotic subtext in the film. The writer has stated that it was supposed to be more homophobic, but the casting ended up making it homoerotic.
I feel this is passing the buck, because why would he want to write a homophobic horror film, (what purpose would that prove), to disguise the fact that the it ended up homoerotic? Another bigot perhaps.
                              There is fairly recent documentary,
Scream Queen: My Nightmare On Elm Street
, that is about Mark Patton and his life and the flack he and the film got for its homosexual undertones, as though that is the worst thing ever.
The breeder element in society are such ignorant dropkicks.
