They got Morgan Fairchild to play Dottie in the movie within the movie, but the girl that played Dottie was way hotter! That doesn't really answer your question, though, does it? Maybe it's because he is, "A loner, a rebel."
Death must be a nice place, no one comes back.

i used to wonder that when i was younger. rewatching it recently i got an undertone that Pee Wee is clearly gay and as a result thinks that's gross. i'm not saying that to be offensive. that made the whole movie 10 times funnier for me.

He's not gay. He's just a 10 year old boy stuck in a grown man's body. He's stuck in the stage where girls are icky, yet he knows that men love women.
A laugh can be a very powerful thing. Why, sometimes in life, it's the only weapon we have. -

I always took it as Pee Wee was sort of a grown up child. Even though I know he has his own house, he's still sort of a kid. He's a little boy in a man's body, and little boys think girls are icky and don't have an interest in dating them. By then end of the movie, he's grown up a little from all of his experiences, and acts sort of G - riding out in the middle of his own movie with Dottie.

Watching it now, Dottie reminds me a lot of Emma Stone. Like if they remade it (which I hope they don't, especially without Paul Reubens, and I hope I didn't jinx it), they would use her.
"Oh, my God. Bear is driving! How can that be?!"
