I think it was pretty well established that Dottie had Speck while he was away.

Dottie was watching Speck in the bike shop. You can see it when Pee-Wee calls from Texas, she answers and has Speck growl on the phone at him.

I was a bit disappointed that he thought more of his bike than Speck.
