I would love to see a sequel to St. Elmo's Fire

But she never told him. When she found out she was pregnant, she married Howie ASAP so he thinks it's his kid. And Billy finds out when he sees Wendy at a club supporting her son's band- he plays sax, naturally.

A sequel could be interesting.
Has there ever been a sequel to a movie over 20 years later with most of an ensemble cast? I think some people consider "The Color Of Money" (1986) to be a sequel to "The Hustler" (1961), but it was a continuation. The only returning character was the late Paul Newman as "Fast Eddie" Felson. -

They did Dumb and Dumber 20 years later anything is possible.
All core actors and Andie MacDowell are alive.
Movie opens up at the funeral for Ally Sheedy's husband (not Alex or Kevin) and they all reunite, most have not spoken much over the years.
Demi Moore's character has been divorced 3 times and she has 3 kids with 3 different dads, and is the central character with a huge IRS payment that needs to be made in 30 days or she goes to jail. Ally Sheedy's character dies with a large life insurance policy and after not speaking for 20 years over a pass that Jules makes on Ally's husband she gets closer to her to reconcile for the loan.
Meanwhile Alex is married and miserable, he is married for 20 years to a character played by Maria Bello and has never kicked his sexual promiscuity over the years, in the process of the movie he walks out on his wife and slowly rekindles the flame with Ally Sheedy's character
Kevin turns out to still be single and never married all this time, leading to homosexual connotations that are never admitted. He is a ghost writer for a Nicholas Sparks type of writer played by Jamey Sheridan, and Sheridan's character is gay. Also brought back out of the woodwork is the crush he had for Sheedy's character.
Emilio's character does become a lawyer and he is married with 2 kids and has been leading a great life, wife played by Kate Hudson, he sees Dale Beaverman at the funeral for Ally's husband as Beaverman worked at the same hospital as Ally's dead husband, despite temptation by Beaverman, Estevez is redeemed and does not give in to temptation as Beaverman had worked her whole life and never had time for a husband.
Mare Winningham marries the Jewish guy and they stay married all the entire time. She is in the movie but has little story line
Billy does a complete turnaround and is a psychologist but he is obsessed with younger women, he shows up to the funeral with Amanda Seyfried as his girlfriend and people give him a tough time about it, he does not play the saxophone anymore His daughter is now 30 years old as well, and he does not have anything to do with her.
Turns out the daughter played by Emma Stone moved to Seattle and the group hire a busy for a long cross country trip to Seattle to help salvage the relationship between father and daughter
On the trip Kevin and Alex are back vying for the attention of Ally Sheedy's character Kevin brings the Jamey Sheridan character, Estevez and Hudson come along without their kids. Other storylines on the trip have Jules asking for money from everyone on the trip, and constantly playing people. etc
I mean it can be done, -

That was an excellent post.
The only '80s movie I can think of that I wanted to see a sequel more than 20 years later was "All the Right Moves". The sequel could take place at a 25 year high school reunion. At this point it has been over 30 years since that film was released in 1983. I doubt Tom Cruise would be interested. I think all the other actors from the movie are alive except Chris Penn. And his passing could be worked into the script. -

That is an overlooked Football film, when the sports movies weren't over the top for sure.
Fast Times at Ridgemont High would lead the pack for 80's films needing sequels - although the story line had closure for the most part and the characters were not very inner connected. Also the bit actors in that movie when on to bigger success beyond Sean Penn in some ways (Nicholas Cage, Eric Stoltz, Forrest Whitaker etc..) -

I'd like to see a cast reunion just going on about each character. I saw this at college age and never really noticed how awful Billy The Kid was, rather as a guy that just couldn't grow up. As far as the others, I'm sure Wendy became a social worker, Kirby probably because a Better Call Saul-type lawyer, Jules got clean for a bit, lost any remaining money she had in Enron and got into x (and then heroin), Kevin became a hit as an early blogger and works for a nice, independent publishing group, Leslie came back after a little soul searching and wound up back with Alek, who found work in with the Obama Administration. Billy got a job with Direct TV for a while. Howie has four stores. Ron got married to a famous director.

Wow! What a great post. I am honored that you took the time to come up with some really good ideas that show what could've happened to the characters in ST. Elmo's Fire.
I am one of those people who actually think Joel Schumacher is a decent director. Although Batman and Robin was a complete misfire on so many levels, I think Lost Boys, Cousins, Falling Down, The Client, and especially Tigerland are all interesting movies that have good pacing.
I would almost want Schumacher to take a different tone with his St. Elmo's Fire reunion movie, maybe make the film grittier and truer to life. The gang from St. Elmo's Fire were all having problems at such a young age; imagine how they would view life today. Of course I would still want that blazing score, but I want it muted and more quiet the second time around. Another point of interest would be to see who has aged and who still looks youthful.
I think the last Rocky sequel did a good job showing people that a sequel can be made many years later and still be decent.
Of course, the last Mad Max movie was outstanding. It may be the best long overdue sequel I have ever seen. -

It's tough, I'm not sure if I can imagine the characters 20-30 years from now.
Jules: I'm not sure where I see her. I want to say she's happily married, but I just don't see it. She's an emotional train wreck. Perhaps her long term boyfriend dies of a heroin overdose and the film starts with her attempted suicide. The film could revolve around this as they reunite and try and help her get through it. In helping Jules overcome her own emotional baggage they all, in turn, deal with theirs.
Leslie: Never married, but became a famous architect. She lives happily in her urban apartment with her two dogs and two cats. She decides that relationships just don't work out for her and keeps things casual between her and men. She enjoys her independence, but she finds herself lonely at times, especially when all of her friends and coworkers have married and had children.
Kevin: I like the idea of him becoming a ghost writer. He's been working on his own book for years, but can never quite finish it. He's been divorced twice and has kids from each marriage. He just can't seem to find the right girl because he never quite got over Leslie
Billy: Went on to travel and perform in BB King's show. He has had a slew of wives and kids out of wedlock. He is addicted to a myriad of substances, many of which he forgets the names of at this point.
Kirby: Becomes a hotshot lawyer in a cozy suburban town. He has two kids and is married to Dale Bibberman. They are both unhappy, frequently cheat on each other, and use their kids to get back at one another.
Wendy: Never quite got over Billy, she was pregnant with his child when he left and later lost the child. She was subsequently unable to have children. Despite being devastated, she later meets and marries a great guy. He is loving and attentive to her and their adoptive children.
Alec: After Leslie and Alec drift apart he continues his womanizing, but something is different. The waters have been spoiled and he finds himself unable to get over Leslie. Due to a political scandal Alec also loses his job and can no longer make payments on his lavish studio apartment. He sort of drifts along for the following years, bumming off of his friends and conquests. One day, a woman shows up on his doorstop to tell him that she is pregnant and he is the father. He buckles down, finds himself any job he can and supports the three of them. Discontent with his life, he starts to drink a little more than is good for him. -

To me this already felt like a mediocre sequel to a far superior movie.
Not me, but check it out:
