Anyone else in love with Kevin?

When I saw "St. Elmo's Fire" in the movie theater in the 80s, the audience broke out in applause when Kevin told Leslie that he was totally in love with her. Clearly, his character was a fan favorite. The writers should have had Leslie choose Kevin over Alec. But their lovemaking was just about Leslie needing to break away from Alec.

McCarthy's Kevin, should have been 'clearly' 'gay', like the movie alluded too, until it decided to cop out. Oh, he can be suggested 'gay'; but not really 'gay', as we don't want to offend or scare the simpleminded sheep away, as this was only the 80's. Kevin, (McCarthy), looked gay and dressed gay and Schumacher was a 'schmuck', for selling out.

Don't worry, they fixed this in the remake, "Reality Bites." Steve Zahn's character is gay, so that rounds out the group in the way Kevin didn't. I think him being in love with Leslie is what makes Kevin so bitter and cynical. Even before Alec starts screwing around, I think he knows (since they are best friends) that he's not with Leslie for the right reasons, or that somehow he's not right for her, which fuels his bitterness. I don't think it's simple jealousy, but the cheating really got to him.
I think also Alec could tell that Kevin liked Leslie. I think it made him feel superior. He immediately jumped on Kevin when Leslie accused him of cheating- it's possible that she discovered some evidence or someone else saw him with one of his fancy women about town, but he knew Kevin carried a torch for Leslie, and accused him first. He totally lost his cool, and part of it was because he lost his perceived superiority (including over Kevin). -

I loved Kevin in this film also. When I first watched this I was at an impressionable age and actually believed any guy secretly in love with me would reveal themselves to me in the same way he did to Ally Sheedy in St Elmo's Fire.
Never happened - Still gutted about that.
But yes he was a total dreamboat in this film! -

Well, she didn't really love him. That one night stand was just that she was angry about Alec. Kevin seemed to be very negative about stuff and it is so dumb when he is in Jules' apt. and she is telling him he is gay and he just leaves. Why didn't he prove he wasn't gay by taking her into the bedroom and having sex with her?
