Instead of Demi imploding on coke they should've gotten a call or heard that Kirby murdered Dale then killed himself. No kidding, it would've added this incredibly serious stamp on the movie and all the trivial nothing issues the kids were having would've suddenly been put in perspective. Just winding up with Demi's crisis felt like another pointless dramatic choice in a movie filled with them.

Pointless? How could you not be moved by Rob Lowe's looking directly into the camera during that speech, speaking truth to all of us?
That was deep, man. Really deep.
I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

I would have loved this ending. Good idea! I also would have liked it if the scene with Kirby standing in the rain went on for like 6 more minutes. The last half hour of the movie is him dying on a hospital bed and the group driving around trying g to find him. Credits roll as they get drunk in a bar.

              Rational and reasonable?
The guy was completely unstable. He became dangerously obsessed with a woman he didn't know, and in his insane stalkery pursuit of this woman he: left law school; joined med school; left med school; got a job; then totally abused his responsibility in that job - as well as the trust of his employer - to have a party to impress her. He then became aggressive when she didn't attend, and tracked her down to a private cabin where despite it being obvious she was in a relationship and not interested in him, he forced a kiss on her.
I think the film then expects us to cheer for his great romantic accomplishment?
Mind you, Andie MacDowell's character should have got a restraining order out on him a lot sooner. Her limp acceptance of his stalker behaviour only served to encourage him. Can't expect much from a female character in this film. They all passively exist to be hit on or used, and suffer from a distinct lack of depth.
Kirby was utterly detestable, and should probably be in prison.
