Was there something wrong with the alcohol or was it just that his system couldn't tolerate it?

Probably a bit of both. At this point the radiation sickness made him weak and feeble and unable to handle what he was drinking.
Don't forget he drinks the stuff neat and in a big gulp so if he was unused to drinking it would have been hard to handle anyway.

I'm guessing radiation sickness. You can't hold anything down, even water, in the acute stages.

for some reason I thought he knew what the alcohol would do to him and was trying to kill himself as he had lost all hope. But everyone else's explanations make more sense than mine 😞

He was dying and knew it. The alchohol if he could keep it down would have knocked him out. Anesthetic. Plus it had been what weeks or months since he had a drink and likely would never ever have the opportunity. Even someone who hadn't smoked would want a fag in a similar circumstance.

I would say radiation sickness would stop him from keeping it down, I always found this whole scene so depressing, his son got torched in the blast, his wife got burnt and died later and all he has left is the electronic game of his sons and the chance he has to get some enjoyment, the bottle of grog he can't keep it down and then the next you see him is in a mass grave.

Mr Kemp was a very proud and noble man.
Made redundant yet stoic in his dignity - notice how he assumed the female role in the house by cooking tea complete with pinny? He maintains his allotment and scolds Jimmy about drinking too heavily, especially considering he had a family on the way.
Remember that they only ate because they will have worked - hard, physical work which won't have helped them in the first place
Theres no reason why he would drink alcohol except for the fact that the old man mentioned he really wanted a cigarette. Mr Kemp merely siezes on the oppurtunity and attempts a trade knowing that its the only way people can live now.
Unfortunately the old man only has scotch, but this seems enough (we can only wonder how Mr Kemp got hold of the cigarettes) and he attempts to drink it.
The reaction his body gives probably came as much of a shock to him than it did the audience, the beginning of the end.
